BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Board List

Kathy Gorchesky RN, BSN -- Vice President and Secretary

Kathy Gorchesky serves as vice president and secretary for the PAIN Foundation. An experienced nurse and nurse educator, she is presently working part-time as the patient care coordinator for the Heart Check For Him cardiac-risk assessment program offered by UPMC Lee Regional in Johnstown, PA.

Mrs. Gorchesky received her bachelor of science in nursing from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Early in her career, she was honored to represent Cambria County’s Chapter of the American Cancer Society as their “Nurse of Hope” for education and advocacy. She has worked in several nursing disciplines, including intensive care, cardiac intensive care, surgical intensive care, post-operative care for open heart surgery patients, emergency room nursing and as an ambulatory care nurse. She was instrumental in developing the treatment protocols and procedures for three major ambulatory surgery centers in Pittsburgh and the Washington, D.C. area.

Regardless of where her career or family has taken her, Mrs. Gorchesky has actively participated in her communities. She is a past vice president of the board of directors for the Altoona Symphony Orchestra. She served as a member of the student advisory council for her son’s school in Florida and was active in fund-raising and assisting with classroom activities. Since returning to Western Pennsylvania, she has worked with the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art as a member of the museum’s fund-raising gala committee.

Mrs. Gorchesky is also an ardent cancer research, education and awareness supporter. Locally, she is a member of the steering committee for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and recently completed the Avon 3-Day Walk for breast cancer research, a 60-mile trek that receives nationwide exposure. She walked to honor friends who are now fighting breast cancer and in remembrance of an aunt who succumbed to the disease because of the fear associated with its diagnosis and treatment.

In addition to her professional and community responsibilities, Mrs. Gorchesky remains active in her son’s school life. She participates in fund-raising initiatives and maintains an emergency teaching certificate that allows her to work as a substitute teacher in St. Benedict’s School and Richland Elementary.

She is married to the foundation’s executive director and founder, Mark Gorchesky, MD, DABPM.

“I have had a great deal of experience, both professional and personal, caring for individuals with cancer and cancer pain. So much of what these patients go through stems from fear of this disease and the life-changing affects that it presents. The PAIN Foundation of Western Pennsylvania will be a resource for these patients who need to be reminded that hope is abundant and that it doesn’t hurt to try.”
